Thoughts of a Canadian University Student

It's funny, I REALLY dislike this book but I suppose the description suits me. Personally, I like Lucy Maud Montgomery's Emily series: Emily of New Moon, Emily Climbs, and Emily's Quest. Although I don't like the new covers they've given them. I like the original illustrated ones, that I believe Lucy requested herself.

You're Anne of Green Gables!

by L.M. Montgomery

Bright, chipper, vivid, but with the emotional fortitude of cottage
cheese, you make quite an impression on everyone you meet. You're impulsive, rash,
honest, and probably don't have a great relationship with your parents. People hurt
your feelings constantly, but your brazen honestly doesn't exactly treat others with
kid gloves. Ultimately, though, you win the hearts and minds of everyone that matters.
You spell your name with an E and you want everyone to know about it.

You're Canada!

People make fun of you a lot, but they're stupid because you've
got a much better life than they do.  In fact, they're probably just jealous.
You believe in crazy things like human rights and health care and not
dying in the streets, and you end up securing these rights for yourself and
others.  If it weren't for your weird affection for ice hockey, you'd be
the perfect person.

Sounds kinda like me! Except the affection for Hockey. Although I love it as a national icon, I just don't want to play it/watch it 24/7.

On vacation (starting tomorrow) in Hawai'i! I promise I'll put up lots of pictures, once I figure out how to use the university as my server and not the free blogger one.

Happy Reading Week!

I'd like to retract my earlier statement that cha-cha is very sexy, because rumba...well, come see it some time. It'll blow you away. Think of those spanish dances, with the girls beckoning the guys, turning slowly, hips swaying. Wow. This is definitely my new favourite. In other news (sort of) the guy I was dancing with when I got the TA thumbs up, Ian, lives in my building! Above me no less! And is friends with Kenton! Weird.

I shall rumba some more.

A disturbing yet oddly satisfying game: penguin baseball.

YAY! I finished the bodice! So now I need to put on the lace, if I decide to, and make the underskirt and it's DONE. Here's pictures of it so far. A little later today I'll pin the lace to the bodice and see what it looks like and decide from there if I want it on or not.

I just spent the last 5 hours fixing/adjusting/seam-ripping-to-make-new-pattern my (muslin) bodice. A muslin is when you make your new pattern out of cheap fabric, to check how it fits. Of course, I have broadish shoulders and an itty-bitty waist with big hips, so patterns require lots of fixing. I had to take it in on the sides and in back. Once I'd done that I had to seam-rip it back apart again so I could use the adjusted pieces as my new pattern. Not fun, really. (My mom's friend's husband once told her: why do you want to cut fabric into little pieces and sew it back together again? My intelligent response to that...um....well....I'll get back to you). Anyways then I finally got to cut it out of the outer fabric, interlining, AND lining, so I just need to sew it together. Having been refreshed by a french mint from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory I shall do just that.

Today:
Went to WEM, had hormone-driven teens behind me pawing and drooling over each other, desperately restrained urge to smack them. Found fabric for hobbit underskirt and interlining/lining of bodice, as well as wonderful periwinkle-lilac crushed organza find in bargain bin to make this dress. It's the dress Arwen is wearing in the Two Towers when Aragorn is flashing back to his time in Rivendell before the Fellowhip departs.

Went to Costco, got some laundry detergent (exciting I know)

Went to Elizabeth's, met her sister's puppies (hack wheeze, but they were really cute), watched "How to lose a guy in 10 days" and ate cookie dough.

And this might say it's posted early Saturday but it's still Friday by my watch.

Check out google's logo, it's fractals from Julia's equations. Pretty cool!

Anyway, dance class was TOTALLY awesome again, as usual. We learned quickstep (very fun) and samba (way way more fun). Allan and I had a blast learning to samba, and when I danced the last time with a guy named Ian we had a TA come over and tell us "You guys are doing awesome!"

And I finished my chemise and skirt (almost, I still need to sew on the hooks and eyes for keeping it closed) for my hobbit costume. Now onto the bodice.........cue theme from Jaws.

I got all my MEC stuff yesterday for Hawai'i and field school. All told, it came to less than $500 which I was very impressed by. Hiking boots, 38L backpack, walking stick, rain coat, rain pants, and 2 pairs of hiking socks. Mmmmmmm hiking socks. They are soooooo comfy. Now I have to break in said hiking boots before Hawai'i, which is going to mean some serious walking and blisters. Ouch.
