Thoughts of a Canadian University Student

Today has been beautiful, absolutely beautiful. It got up to 24C, sunny, light breeze....wow. I can't wait for summer to come! Unfortunately it's supposed to get a little cooler again, 8-14C. Oh well, I can handle that.

I get to go home for Easter! I'm so excited! It's also my Grandma's 80th birthday. I don't have anything for her, yikes! I'll have to think of something. I'll also get the chance to get my pictures from home developed. I went back through my Mom's negatives and am getting pictures printed to make an album. She'd made a beautiful one for me that I unfortunately ransacked for scrapbooking (yes I am an idiot and feel really guilty about it now). But now I can put it right!

Pretty cool, they're going to have windows in Inuktitut for the Canadian Inuit people.

Oh My Lord. There are SO many people at West Ed today it's ridiculous. Between it being March Break in some places, the Junos, and the speed-skating tournament you could hardly move for the people. So, don't got to West Ed until sometime in April.

It's also rainy, windy, and icky out. My window is open a slight crack, so a sound ranging from a low moan to a high shriek continues to emmanate from behind my curtains. It's disturbing.

I put some Hawai'i picture up on the deviant art site (see link at side I'm too lazy to html it). There's lava trees, lava flows, beach pictures, and waterfall pictures. Baby oh baby.

Had a lovely pot-luck dinner at Elizabeth's last night, which culminated in her taking out her afghan squares (which, since she started at age 11 are not all exactly even and are in a myriad of colours) and me telling her it WAS possible to make a passable, even nice blanket out of them. We laid them out so that all the rows were of even length, if not even numbers of squares, we'll sew them into a blanket and then I'll sew a fleece back to it so it won't warp.

Today my stupid TA for clastics finally handed back some of our labs, and he took off moronic marks that should not have been taken off. I don't mind losing marks if I've done something wrong or made a mistake, but when I abbreviate "hummocky cross-stratification" to "HCS" or "hummocky x-strat" (both of which our professor does constantly) I don't expect to lose 2 marks apiece! There was also no hot water in the shower, I haven't finished my mapping OR carbonates labs, and I have my clastics lab final Tuesday. So I'm a little cranky.

On the bright side I did get my rock hammer and Rite in the Rain field notebook today, so that's cool. Now I just need to buy a compass and pay my $350 fee. I really wish I had some rocks to smash up......I will be hammer-happy for awhile.

Yesterday was the last day of dance, sigh. It was lots of fun to learn, and I'll be going back for Newcomer II next semester (with the lovely and talented Allan again of course). This year we learned:

International - Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep
Latin - Samba, Cha-Cha, Rumba, Jive.

I can't wait to find out what next year is.......

And here's a picture I took this summer...you can see this and much more at my deviantart site! I promise to have more pictures up there soon! Sketches too!

It's an indian pipe, by the way.

*apparently deviantart doesn't let you post pictures from its site. So you'll have to go there to see it.

Yay for Sunday!

Sunday was lots of fun, Angela and I took Allan to get material and patterns so we can sew him a Merry (Meriadoc Brandybuck) costume. We had a tough time with the vest, I mean really, who wears mustard yellow? But his frock coat is lovely forest green fleece, and we found the best (for cheap) material for a Fellowship cloak EVER. It's see-through-y with a slight pattern, soft and fleecy looking on the right side. It's even grey! Unfortunately it doesn't change colour to match your surrounds like true elven material, but hey, I doubt elves wove the material. I need him to go back and get more though, because both of us have only half the material we need to make cloaks, since we underestimated the yardage. C'est la vie. I also got material and the Raggedy Ann pattern from Simplicity to make stuffed dolls from LOTR. See, I'm obsessed with the gorgeous cotumes, but can't afford that much material to make full-sized ones of them all (plus, where would I wear them all?). So I'm going to make them in mini! First on the list - Pippin and Elanor Gamgee. I also got the new McCall's pattern, 4491, to make the Arwen dresses (in my size). They have princess seams and the originals did not, as well they're only one piece but I don't care. I can either adjust it to make it two, or preferrably leave it as one and called it "inspired by" instead of a reproduction.

Yesterday I sewed Step 1 of my newest quilting project, and seeing as there's only five steps which will all take about the same length of time, I'm doing well! Of course, quilting it and finishing it aren't in those five steps, and with exams coming up my time spent on it will be severely limited. I also made up my schedule for next year, and found out that I have the following fall exam schedule:
Wednesday Dec 15 2:00
Thursday Dec 16 9:00
Friday Dec 17 2:00
Saturday Dec 18 9:00, 2:00

WHO THE HELL HAS EXAMS ON SATURDAYS?? ESPECIALLY TWO??

I thought only engineers did! And the worst of it is I have to take those classes no matter what so my exams will be then no matter. What. I thought 5 exams in 5 straight days is worse. Try 5 in 3.5 days. I may not be sane for next Christmas.

Some guy in Maine tried to commit suicide by nailing himself to a cross. According to the article:

"Lt. Pierre Boucher said the man took two pieces of wood, nailed them together in the form of a cross and placed them on the floor. He attached a suicide sign to the wood and then proceeded to nail one of his hands to the makeshift cross using a 14-penny nail and a hammer.

"When he realized that he was unable to nail his other hand to the board, he called 911," Boucher said.

It was unclear whether the man was seeking assistance for his injury or help in nailing down his other hand."

Hee hee hee. Although I shouldn't laugh at others' misfortune. And I'd like to point out the man said he had not seen "The Passion of the Christ".

BUSY Weekend

On Friday I rented some movies, Bend it Like Beckham and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. The first one was totally awesome, the last one, well, left something to be desired. I also made some double chocolate cookies, but unfortunately our very hot oven burnt the bottoms of the first batch.

I slept in Saturday (for the first time since September, pretty much, since choir is now over) and went for a run, literally, to MEC, where I got some field school stuff: red fleece, 1L water pack (because 2 was not enough hiking in Hawai'i), and a few other odds and ends. That afternoon I got some textile medium and painted the White Tree of Gondor on a black t-shirt and an album for my Hawai'i photos. And then that night Allan and I went to UADC's beach party dance, where we danced, mostly cha-chaed the night away. There was a limbo contest which I came decently close to winning. I made it completely under the second last level, but when I moved to stand up I threw my head forward a little too quickly and overbalanced. Ah well. It was only about 2.5 ft or less off the ground, so that's pretty bendy. We danced so long I got blisters.

Yesterday I slept in again, and went to the Art Gallery with Robin. Unfortunately the bus didn't come so I ended up walking, and that's about 24 blocks. I didn't think to walk down to the LRT and take it the rest of the way. We saw some cool and some strange pictures, and had fun in the children's interactive display where we got to make magic wands and decorate red shoes. We then went to the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald for dinner, since they had a fairly inexpensive (for the Fairmont) dinner special due to the Edmonton Dining Festival. It was the best salmon I have ever tasted in my life, seasoned with maple glaze and pepper berry. Finally, we wandered back here, meeting Kenton and Kayla on the way, and watched Charlie's Angels (again, only because Hidalgo wasn't playing at City Centre until 10:30 and we had school today). Let me tell you, it isn't any better the second time.

Sooooo tired. So very tired. And did I mention I hate Carbonates? Well here's me mentioning it again. I hate that class. I don't find it interesting, it's hard to stay awake when all you do is copy notes from the board, and I never know how to answer the lab questions. I've been scraping by with most of them, and most of our class failed one assignment (including me).

Hard rock for me all the way. Maybe even mineralogy.

Student stabbed in U of A library

"Edmonton - Police are looking for three men after a 19-year-old student was stabbed in a University of Alberta library Tuesday afternoon.

The man was in a carrel on the second floor of the Cameron library around noon when he was stabbed in the torso, police say.
He then ran to a health centre in another building for help.

Campus police said there was a lot of blood on the second floor and the stairs.

The man is being treated at University Hospital and his condition hasn't been released.

Police say they hadn't been able to interview the man by mid-afternoon and weren't sure when he'd be medically fit to talk to investigators. A description of the assailants also hadn't been released.

Based on witness statements, polic believe the student was targeted and that the attack wasn't random. Police say it hasn't been linked to gang activity."

I was walking out of SUB when the victim ran by me. He was wearing a (previously) white t-shirt with what looked like black writing on it, jeans, and scuffed white trainers. He was tallish and thinnish, with dark skin and looked like he may have been of East Indian descent, with dark hair. I have a vague impression that it might have been curly but I'm not sure. He was covered, absolutely covered in blood. It was running down his face from what I thought was a wound on his right temple, and was tightly gripping his left wrist which looked as thought it had a pumping wound. A large blood trail was left behind him, through to CAB, past Pita Pit and Tim Horton's, into the pedway and Cameron. He went by me at between 12:00 and 12:05, as I had looked at my watch directly before leaving from SUB. When I got to Cameron Library no one had even figured out what had happened yet, they were still standing around looking shocked. I dropped off some books to be returned, and went to go to my class in Tory. I found a girl from my class there, and started talking to her. It was horrifying to see, I felt sick and dizzy thinking about it. Needless to say I didn't go to class, but went to calm down in PS Warren and did some homework.

I'm not going to dance tonight either, that'll have to wait.
