Follow the Mome Raths

Thoughts of a Canadian University Student

Yay! So on Friday I got presents from the gift exchange. From Angela I got really nice stoneware mixing bowls, these should help to make cookie making easier! And from Marcia and Kayla I got a rock tumbler! How cool is that? I've always wanted one, so now I have one :D It's tumbling right now by the piano, but it's loud so it's covered by a box, blanket, and pillows. By the time I go home I should have lovely polished stones. These ones are just from the kit, I have to collect a 1/2 lb myself to do next. And I also need a refill of grit and polish before I can do that.

On another topic, I have some Harry Potter questions.
1)Would squibs be able to brew potions?
-After talking to some people about this, most seem to think they could. I myself think that they couldn't brew potions, because I would think that you would need to be inherently magical to allow them to work. I'm sure that they could use already brewed potions though (Mr. Filch uses "Mrs. Skower's All-purpose Magical Mess Remover") In fact, I bet the only squib-friendly subjects at Hogwarts are Herbology and History of Magic.

2)Where do wizarding children learn to read and write?
-It is apparent that Ron knows nothing of the muggle world ("fellytone"), yet is obviously capable of reading, writing, and doing mathematics. Are they all homeschooled?

Annnnnnnnnnnnnd two days to Trilogy Tuesday! Woohoo!

Here's something funny to do:
Go to www.google.ca, search for "Miserable Failure", but instead of hitting enter pick the "I'm feeling lucky" instead

So today was a weird exam. I had just gotten my paper and was about to settle down to write when I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. I looked down to my left, at the airvent in the floor. A second later, a little head popped out! I kind of let out a gasp of surprise, but it was only a little brown house mouse (Mus musculus for those in the know, and much smaller and thinner than the big round deermice I'm used to at home) that we'd seen running through our lecture a few weeks previously. I watched him climb out of the grate, and run around in my row. Needless to say it took me about 10 minutes to focus on my exam again, and through the rest of it the little mouse kept popping in and out of the grate, and running around behind me. Actually, this reminds me of something that happened this summer...

I was sitting at my desk at work (in a Provincial Park, so wildlife is rather expected indoors) when I felt a soft tickling moving up my leg into my lap. I looked down, and there was a deer mouse sitting in my lap! I kind of said "Oh!" in a loud voice, although I'm not scared of rodents, it just surprised me! My supervisor turned around and I said something like "Mouse!" and she sees it and completely goes bananas, which brings the gate attendant in, who ALSO goes bananas. They grab a container and start trying to get the mouse into it, meanwhile it's gotten scared and run behind me so I'm trying not to squash it between my back and the chair, they're trying to sweep the mouse into the container with the lid but swatting me instead...havoc I tell you. Eventually they got the mouse into the container, and our Assistant Superintendant took it out to the woods and set it free again.

Here's a site good for a laugh in the middle of finals.

Saturday night was fun, I went to Elizabeth's and helped her and Michelle (along with Frank, Robin, Kenny, and Amber) decorate their tree. It was interesting, between getting my cast signed and trying to keep the boys away from the chocolate, and we watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the original version. I myself like the Jim Carrey one too, but that might be because I didn't see the cartoon until Grade 12. All in all it was a very fun night

Yesterday and today I have been studying, and avoiding studying by knitting. Yes, I lead an exciting life. Thankfully Ben helped me understand what on earth my textbook meant by vertical and lateral accretion in flood plains. I think I understand the rest of Geomorph now too. It's tomorrow :P, with Palaeo that afternoon, 290 the next afternoon, and 220 the morning after that. Then I have some days off and Min in a week. Then LOTR trilogy. Yay!

I have so much to do for finals, I need to be able to write an essay (with references) on "Evidence for Evolution in the Palaeontological Record", I need to know the 39 chapters from the Geologic Survey of Canada's site, as well as all the other lecture material we've covered. On the same day as that final (Tuesday Dec. 9) I have geomorphology, and I don't understand anastamosing stream patterns.

Plus I've had to get up early every day this week because the stupid people cleaning the carpets and fixing the apartment can't get their days together so I get up at 8:30 to let them in. I'm tired, and frustrated.
